Kia America has corrected the fuel economy ratings for select 2011, 2012 and 2013 model year vehicles. Approximately 300,000 Kia vehicles are affected.
Procedural misinterpretations and errors at the Hyundai/Kia joint testing operation in Korea led to overstated miles per gallon (MPG) ratings for select Kia models. As part of the corrective actions, the fuel economy ratings for vehicles in dealers’ inventory were relabeled. On average, combined Hyundai/Kia average fleet fuel economy levels were reduced for the 2013 model year from 27 MPG to 26, a change of 3 percent.
It is important to note that all Kia vehicles still comply with the current Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and this situation does not affect the safety of our vehicles.
We recognize that fuel economy played a role in some customers’ car-buying decisions, and we are very appreciative that you chose to purchase a Kia. As a Kia owner, your satisfaction is central to our business and we are dedicated to building and maintaining a long-term, trust-based relationship with you. We also understand you may have incurred additional out-of-pocket expenses resulting from an expectation of greater fuel economy. To that end, we are committed to compensating affected current and former Kia owners fairly for any unexpected fuel costs resulting from this ratings adjustment.
